(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, February 8, at 7 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will continue Education Week at the Seventh Annual Standing Ovation for DC Public Schools to celebrate and reward the committed educators of DC Public Schools (DCPS) for their dedication and commitment to providing students in Washington, DC with an excellent education. The 29 award winners include Teacher of the Year, Principal of the Year, and School Staff Member of the Year. Special guests will include Wyclef Jean and Tim Gunn.
Standing Ovation, which began in 2010, has become a hallmark of the DCPS’ broader commitment to investing in and celebrating educators. Hosted by DC Public Education Fund, Standing Ovation brings together business leaders, government officials, philanthropic champions, and top educators from across the District to celebrate the exceptional educators of DCPS. The awards ceremony is made possible thanks to the generosity of numerous corporate and charitable sponsors. Alice and David M. Rubenstein generously provide the $230,000 in cash prizes for Standing Ovation each year.
Mayor Bowser kicked off Education Week this past Friday by releasing the solicitation for space to open new child care centers in the three District-owned buildings. The Mayor also announced that the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) will administer the grants to child care providers and provide a $1 to $1 match in capital loans to the District’s $9 million investment. On Monday, the Mayor launched Learn24, a new initiative, led by DME to ensure children and youth have access to quality educational and enrichment activities beyond the regular school day. On Tuesday, the Mayor highlighted the Administration’s Safe Passage efforts to ensure students can travel to and from school safely. On Wednesday, the Mayor announced new ways for the community to get involved in the Every Day Counts! campaign and celebrated Sousa Middle School for their improved attendance.
