Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Landscape Scan

Thursday, November 30, 2023

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) conducted a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Landscape Scan. The scan details how schools integrate SEL policies and practices, and the system-wide support available to foster the development of students’ and adults’ socio-emotional competencies. The data collection and analysis for this scan occurred between January and July 2023. The goal of this work is to ensure every student in Washington DC has the necessary socio-emotional skills – conflict resolution, self-management, positive decision-making, and relationship-building – to engage and succeed in DC’s reimagined high school experience, workforce pathways, and beyond.

An accompanying document, The Evolution of Social Emotional Learning in Washington, DC Public Schools: A Short Roadmap, provides an overview of the scan's findings designed to help school leaders, teachers, and SEL providers create learning environments that support students’ SEL and cognitive development.

To further support this work, the SEL Provider Guide is a repository for select city-wide SEL providers and programs. The guide catalogs the in-school programs and partnerships that provide additional resources, tools, training, or technical assistance to DC teachers, LEA Leaders, students, and families to help deepen their SEL integration. This guide will be updated bi-monthly. If you would like your program added, or have questions or comments about the SEL Landscape Scan, email Ayanna Shingler at [email protected]
