DME Community Conversations

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education will host a series of "Community Conversations" to explore critical topics impacting our education system. Residents and community stakeholders are invited to share their feedback and learn more about the District’s work to provide a world-class education to all of our city’s students and families.

Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn and Dr. Shontia Lowe, Executive Director of the OST Office held a virtual discussion on how DC can ensure all of our youth have access to quality, engaging, educational, and enriching activities and opportunities beyond school hours.

October 24: DME Community Conversation with DC Teachers of the Year

Deputy Mayor Paul Kihn held a Community Conversation with three "DC Teacher of the Year" winners on what we as a city can do to best support our teachers and ensure DC is an oasis for talented, diverse educators.

July 21: DME Community Conversation on Attendance

The first DME Community Conversation, held on Thursday, July 21, focused on attendance and reducing chronic absenteeism.

Deputy Mayor Kihn shared the District's vision, strategies, and investments to improve attendance outcomes and reduce chronic absenteeism. He then moderated a panel discussion with education leaders and students. DME has partnered with EveryDay Labs to offer schools with free, intervention-based service to reduce absenteeism. EveryDay Labs discussed their services that provide students, families, and school leaders with a seamless, evidence-based strategy for engaging families as partners in attendance improvement.
