The DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education has released a new implementation guide for transforming the teaching profession across the District. The Career Lattice framework outlines a research-based approach to preparing, supporting, and retaining teachers in DC public and charter schools.
The guide is built on four core pillars:
- clinical on-the-job training
- structured mentorship
- strategic staffing
- career advancement pathways that keep great teachers in schools.
Unlike a traditional career ladder, the lattice allows educators to advance and grow without leaving the classroom. It introduces six clearly defined roles, from Teaching Fellow to Professor Distinguished Teacher, each with specific responsibilities, advancement criteria, and support structures.
This structure is designed to reduce burnout, strengthen instructional quality, and ensure all students—especially those furthest from opportunity—have access to well‑prepared, well‑supported teachers. It reflects a fundamental belief of our office: teaching is a profession that requires deep expertise, sustained mentorship, and meaningful opportunities for leadership.
This guide is intended for educators, school and LEA leaders, and policymakers across DC.
